En 1947, John Steinbeck et Robert Capa décident de partir quarante jours en URSS, de Moscou à Stalingrad en passant par la Géorgie et l’Ukraine pour un reportage destiné au New York Herald Tribune.
Ce journal traduit par Philippe Jaworski est pour la première fois publié en français, dans son intégralité, avec les photographies de Capa. Steinbeck trouve ici un ton souvent plein d’humour et de sincérité, se contentant souvent d’une observation exacte. Malgré les multiples contraintes du voyage, le livre éclaire finement un monde obstinément fermé sur lui-même.
Suite à sa publication, les Soviétiques qualifieront les deux hommes de « hyène » et de « gangster », tandis qu’une certaine presse américaine y verra un plaidoyer pour l’URSS de Staline.
