En 1974, Bill Cardoso, collaborateur du journal « New Times » va passer 50 jours au Zaïre pour couvrir le match de boxe du siècle, opposant Mohamed Ali à George Foreman. Ce match plusieurs fois reporté doit avoir lieu dans un pays chaotique, écrasé sous la dictature de Mobutu sur laquelle l’auteur porte un regard sans concession.
Ce dernier nous retrace surtout son périple avec un franc-parler réjouissant, et nous décrit son goût immodéré pour la boisson, les médocs et la marijuana locale, la plus forte au monde. S’il va à la rencontre des Zaïrois, il n’oublie pas ses confrères journalistes, également sur place, qu’il raille gentiment.
